Bedroom Sets Explained: Double, Queen and King Suites (What's Included)

Modern bedroom with a neutral upholstered bed, soft bedding, bedside styling and natural light, illustrating bedroom furniture and suite options.

The bedroom set is also referred to as the bedroom suite, which consists of matching bedroom furniture that can be used together. They usually begin with the bed frame and bedside tables. Other components include the dresser and tallboy. The mattress is rarely included in the suite.

In this Divano guide, we will tell you more about the items included in the sets, space requirements for the double, queen and king bedroom suites, and whether purchasing the suite is better than getting the furniture piece by piece. In case you already have your preferences, view all the bedroom furniture offered by us.

What's included in a bedroom set?

The number in the name gives you the number of pieces.

3-piece, 4-piece and 5-piece suites

Set

Usually includes

Best for

3-piece

Bed frame + 2 bedside tables

Smaller rooms, apartments, guest rooms

4-piece

Bed frame + 2 bedside tables + dresser or tallboy

Main bedrooms with one free wall for storage

5-piece

Bed frame + 2 bedside tables + dresser + tallboy (sometimes a mirror instead)

Larger main bedrooms without a built-in robe

Each type of storage unit fits a specific room style:

  • Dresser: long and wide, having six or more drawers. The dresser is mostly placed in front of a mirror or television.

  • Tallboy: slim and long in shape, which makes it fit a lot of stuff in a small space.

  • Lowboy: falls somewhere between the two, having a compact size.

In case your bedroom is small, a tallboy wins over a dresser in any situation. Here is our guide to why a tallboy dresser will change your small bedrooms forever.

Is the mattress included?

Not typically. “Bed frame” refers to bed head, bedside rails, and slat base. Look for slats in the product description; most wooden frames have them, and hence, you will not require an additional ensemble base.

Buy mattresses individually, but make sure that their sizes fit the bed frame perfectly. If your mattress is slightly smaller, it may slide inside the bed frame.

If you prefer buying both of them together, take a look at our article on bed frame & mattress set combinations.

Double, queen and king bedroom sets compared

The dimensions of an Australian bed depend on the mattress; the frame extends a bit from each side.

Size

Mattress (W × L)

Sleeps

Typical frame footprint

Room that suits a full suite

Double

about 138 × 188 cm

1 adult comfortably, 2 snugly

about 150 × 205 cm

from about 3 × 3.2 m

Queen

153 × 203 cm

2 adults

about 165 × 215 cm

from about 3 × 3.4 m

King

183 × 203 cm

2 adults with room to spare

about 195 × 215 cm

from about 4 × 4 m

However, frame sizes may differ, particularly in upholstered or wingback headboard beds. Always pay attention to the actual dimensions of the product as opposed to the mattress size. All the items in our collection of bed frames and bases have their dimensions stated clearly.

There are two more bed sizes that you should know. The king single bed is about 107 × 203 cm, and it can accommodate only one person. The super king bed provides extra width in big main bedrooms.

Double bedroom set

A double bedroom suite is ideal for guest bedrooms, teenage bedrooms, and small apartments. It is 15 cm shorter and 15 cm narrower than a queen. The shorter length of the bed becomes important for persons who are above 180 cm tall.

A double bed with two bedside tables works well where there is not enough space to accommodate a queen-size bed with sufficient walking space. Double bedroom with a single bedside table and a wall cabinet may also be suitable in a narrow guest bedroom.

Queen size bedroom set

Queen beds are the most preferred beds in Australia. A queen bedroom set will comfortably fit in most main bedrooms constructed within the past decades, with space to place two bedside cabinets and a dresser or highboy.

If you cannot make up your mind on whether to go for double or queen, then it is best to settle for the latter.

King bedroom suite

Each person sleeping in the room will have a 91.5 cm mattress, which is the important width of a single-sized bed. The drawback lies in terms of space on the floor, as a king-size bed along with the bedside tables will exceed 3 metres in width.

Take measurements before making a decision. Think of using a tallboy instead of the wide chest of drawers.

What size room fits each suite?

This requires a clear pathway of about 60 to 75 cm on all sides and the bottom part of the bed. Less than 60 cm creates a cramped space each time you make your bed and access the drawers.

This is one simple way to measure your room:

  • Room Width: frame width + 2 bedside tables (45 to 50 cm). In a queen, this will give you 165+100=265 cm.

  • Room Length: frame length + 75 cm walkway at the foot + depth of any dresser on the opposite wall (45 cm). In a queen, this is 215+75+45=335 cm.

  • Doors: Measure the swing of the bedroom and any wardrobe doors. A typical design error involves the placement of the dresser before a robe door.

  • Drawer Space: An open dresser drawer adds about 40 cm more space. Make sure you have enough space to stand in front of it.

  • Windows & Power Points: Make sure you know where the windows and power points are located before choosing where to place your bed.

In round numbers:

  • The size for a double suite begins at about 3 × 3.2 m.

  • The size for a queen suite begins at about 3 × 3.4 m, and a suite of 3.5 × 4 m is a good choice.

  • The size for a king suite begins at about 4 × 4 m.

Before placing an order, use painter's tape to mark the dimensions of your bed on the floor and walk around it. Imagine opening the wardrobe and pulling out a drawer.

Buy a set or buy pieces separately?

There is no right way. It all depends on your room, budget, and how particular you are about coordinating things.

A set makes sense when:

  • You are going to fit out an entire room from scratch.

  • You will get your wood colour, paint colour, and hardware matched without fail.

  • You would prefer to have one order and one delivery.

  • Pricing is much better than the individual prices added together.

Buying separately makes sense when:

  • Because you already have a bed or a mattress that you love

  • Your room can accommodate only a tallboy instead of a chest or one bedside table instead of two

  • You would like a combination of styles, for example, a wood bed with white bedside tables

  • You would like to finance the purchase over several months

If you buy separately but from within the same range, then you get both the advantages: a coordinating look and just the pieces that your room needs.

This approach works well in harmony with our Divano style of working too. Each piece comes with an open price and honest dimensions and delivery date. You can coordinate your room, add more pieces later and be sure about their delivery time. Find out more on our shipping and delivery page.

How to build your own matching suite

First pick your bed frame and add items that match its finish and style, preferably from the same collection. Learn how to match your bedside table and dresser.

Matching bedside tables and dressers

  • Match the height: Measure the sum of the height of the frame and the mattress depth and see how close this is to the listed height of the bedside table top.

  • Match the width to the bed size: Around 45 to 60 cm in width, bedside tables look good for double or queen beds. A king can support larger sizes without appearing out of proportion.

  • Match the finish, not only the colour: A white finish can be high gloss, matte, washed timber or Hampton style. An oak colour can be honey, natural or grey. Selecting pieces from one range avoids a mismatch which looks different when standing together.

  • Match the timber finish story: Acacia, pine or solid rubberwood has a different ageing process from engineered wood. A sintered stone top makes for a modern and tougher option. Fluted fronts suit better if repeated around the room.

  • Select the dresser for the wall space available: A dresser needs a large wall to go on, while a tallboy needs a narrow opening or goes well alongside a robe.

Look at our bedside tables, dressers, tallboys, and chests of drawers all lined up next to one another, and narrow down your search by finish.

White bedroom suites

White bedroom suite furniture is ideal for creating space in smaller rooms and will complement coastal, Hampton and Scandi schemes. Two types of white bedroom suites look particularly good:

  • Modern fluted: White storage with vertical fluting, along with clean lines on bedside tables. Contemporary in style but not too clinical.

  • Hampton Classic: White painted furniture with panelled drawers, gentle curves and classic hardware. Perfect for the more relaxed coastal bedroom suite.

Combining white storage units with wood or upholstered beds provides warmth. All white and linen can create a bright and hotel-like bedroom scheme. Mixing whites? Keep the whites from the same palette, warm or cool.

Bedroom set FAQs

What does a bedroom suite include?
The most common bedroom suite consists of a bed frame and two bedside tables that match one another. If a bedroom suite has four pieces, there will be either a dresser or a tallboy, and if there are five pieces, both will be included. The mattress is not included.

Is a bedroom set better value?
Yes, it could be so when you require all the items in one set and the cost of such a set is less than buying those items individually. It would be bad business when you wind up with a dresser that cannot be fitted in your room.

What size bedroom do I need for a king suite?
The size required will be around 4 x 4 metres, considering there will be a king-size bed, bedside tables and a tallboy/dresser in the room. The walkway will be approximately between 60 to 75 cm, leaving sufficient space around the bed.

What size room fits a queen suite?
A queen-sized bed with two bedside tables can be placed from 3 × 3.4 metres. If you want to add a dresser into your room, then you will need at least 3.5 × 4 metres so that you have space to move around comfortably.

What's the difference between a double and a queen bedroom set?
The size of a queen bed is 153 x 203 cm, and that of a double bed is 137 x 190 cm. The queen set fits couples and most master bedrooms, while a double set fits guest bedrooms and teenagers' bedrooms.
